This session has qualified for 1.5 LU|HSW Credits
This session builds off of the concept "building re-use is climate action" and delves into how our heritage and older building stock can re-imagine themselves in the overall sustainability ecosystem. The session will review available financing levers to be utilized to re-position older buildings in an ESG portfolio and teach how to talk the sustainability language of the finance ecosystem. The session will dive deeper into the role heritage practitioners can play in crafting adaptive re-use and circular materials policies in their regions. An example of this advocacy will be presented from work in Ontario to develop the Ontario Municipalities Embodied Carbon Management Toolkit that is advocating for adaptive re-use of buildings first by looking at the carbon impacts of demolition, the benefits of re-use and how to best re-use materials as we work towards a circular ecosystem. The session will conclude with a broad overview of the circular economy in the built environment in action across Canada - and highlight the successes and lessons learned as well as the practitioners working together to make it happen.
