Meet: 12:45 PM Departure: 1:15 PM Visit two masonry buildings at Dorchester Square, the Sun Life Building and Windsor Station, that have been given a new life, with full exterior restorations. Chartered in 1865, the Sun Insurance Company of Montreal remains the headquarters of this worldwide life insurance company. The company's original Dorchester Square, then called Dominion Square, building in Montreal was built in 1918. The company completed construction of the expansion of its headquarters with its new 26-story headquarters north tower making it the largest building in terms of square footage anywhere in the British Empire. Attendees will learn about the challenges of the exterior restoration of the building granite masonry, to meet new restoration’s technology and guidelines. The session will include knowing the behaviour of the assembly of the massive masonry wall in order to respect the integrity of its original architectural characteristics during their interventions and restoration. Windsor Station, a former railway station and National Historic Site of Canada was built with limestone walls. The original portions of the building were constructed in the late 19th century and additions were added in the early 20th century. Attendees will learn about the recent $48 million restoration of the exterior envelope including replacement of all 1115 wood-framed windows, reconstruction of the North Tower, restoration of the South Tower, and restoration of the decorative ornament of the Peel Street entrance.
