Meet: 12:00 PM Departure: 12:30 PM Attendees will learn about the challenges and new methodology used in conservation and restoration of Modern Heritage to comply with current energy efficiency requirements. Habitat 67 provides an example to attendees of a renovation project that forces us to consider historical issues, the development of specific techniques, and unique building envelope improvements. Nearly 60 years later, the cumulative effects of envelope and system failures have led to major rehabilitation work affecting most all building components. The interventions first focused on understanding the phenomena causing the deterioration of materials and then on developing feasible technical and logistical solutions to ensure the sustainability of the work. Attendees will see how the product specification and methods recently applied to Habitat 67 have evolved to offer a sustainable alternative for the long-term preservation of the building, while respecting the modernist thinking that created it.
Learning Objectives:
Describe the sustainability standards considered and the methodologies evaluated to achieve them with this Modern Heritage landmark.
Offer insight on the building envelope integrity and performance of the interventions.
Summarize the challenges and their unique deterioration issues based on the buildings construction methods and positioning on the site.
Derive the importance of material choices in design and care after construction.
