Through the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program VHF has found that homeowners can bring operational carbon to the same level of performance as a modern home and retain the embodied carbon that makes older buildings intrinsically sustainable. Heritage practitioners should be aware of the options that reduce emissions and are sensitive to heritage values. This presentation will explore results from the program and provide suggestions for how this approach could be brought to other municipalities to make the important connection between heritage conservation and sustainability.
Learning Objectives:
List methods of deep energy retrofiting wood frame houses
Describe the opportunity for operational carbon efficiency in pre 1940- homes
Include methods of improving operational carbon in their conservation planning
Argue for the sustainability of historic buildings beyond embodied carbon
