Senior Associate, Petrographer

Since joining Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., Karla Salahshour has specialized in the evaluation and characterization of historic and modern building materials. Her work in WJE’s Cleveland materials laboratory focuses on the petrographic examination of concrete, mortars, grouts, dimension stone, manufactured stone, brick, and other construction materials. She also conducts field evaluations, such as evaluating distress in various types of concrete, terrazzo, coating systems, terra cotta facades, EIFS and stucco systems.
Karla’s laboratory work has included investigating the causes of distress in construction materials, characterization of cementitious materials, and the evaluation of durability concerns in hardened concrete. Her work on terrazzo-related flooring includes assessment of cement and polymer terrazzo in libraries, hospitals, airports, and schools.
Karla’s work in historic and modern materials has included petrographic analysis of concrete and terrazzo at the Perry Victory Monument at Put-in-Bay, Ohio; John J. Earley’s mosaic concrete on Edison Monument Tower in Menlo Park, New Jersey; Hoover Dam in Henderson, Nevada; and the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C.
Karla is a member of the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT), American Concrete Institute (ACI), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the Society for Concrete Petrographers (SCP). She is a registered professional engineer in Ohio. Karla has given presentations and hands-on seminars on petrography and laboratory evaluations for numerous organizations throughout her career.
