Senior Conservator & Materials Analyst

Kirsten Travers Moffitt is the Senior Conservator & Materials Analyst at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF) in Virginia. She received her M.S. from the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC) in 2011, specializing in the conservation and analysis of painted surfaces. She has a special research interest in historic paints and in 2013 her architectural finishes research at CWF helped inform Benjamin Moore's Williamsburg paint line. She has authored numerous papers and lectured widely on the subject, including "Verdigris in Williamsburg: History, Analysis, and Interpretation" (2024 Architectural Finishes Research Conference, Amsterdam), "Chrome Yellow: American Mineral, American Fancy" (2023 Colour Matters Conference, Oxford University) and "Early American Graining: a Technical Survey" (2023 American Institute for Conservation 51st Annual Meeting, Jacksonville, Florida). She co-organized (with Mary Jablonski) the 2017 International Architectural Paint Research Conference at Columbia University and co-edited the conference publication (Archetype Publications) which included her paper “Limewashed Island: Architectural Finish in Early Bermuda”, co-authored with Ed Chappell. In addition to leading various professional and in-house historic finishes workshops, Kirsten has lectured for Atlas Obscura, International Academic Projects, Buffalo State's Art Conservation department and historic preservation students at Clemson University. Since 2015, Kirsten has served as affiliated faculty at WUDPAC leading cross-section microscopy and polarizing light microscopy workshops for conservation graduate students, and in 2023 she co-instructed (with Aaron Shugar) the pre-conference workshop "Polarized Light Microscopy Refresher" for mid-career professionals, with another workshop set for 2025.
