An award-winning citizen architect and Preservationist, Angel
Ayón has dedicated his 26-year career to not only preserving
significant historic architecture but improving it—using
contemporary technologies, more sustainable approaches,
and resilient strategies. Committed to professional advocacy in
practice, he leads AYON Studio, a values-driven, MBE-certified
firm founded on this mission.
Angel’s work in his native Havana, Cuba; Washington, D.C.;
Puerto Rico; and New York City includes numerous local and
National Historic Landmarks and structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Notable projects include cultural and educational centers such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and Governor’s Island, as well as residential and commercial buildings like Westbeth Artists Housing and Eleven80.
Angel has achieved meaningful influence at the neighborhood scale, such as with his leadership in the 20-year fight to save the 1857 Mount Morris Fire Watchtower in Harlem and his continual advocacy work with Save Harlem Now! and the Historic Districts Council. He also is a member of the NY State Commission on the Restoration of the Capitol and serves on the boards of The Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS), the Preservation League of NY State, and the James Marston Fitch Charitable Foundation.
Angel co-authored the award-winning book Reglazing Modernism - Intervention Strategies for 20th Century Icons and has a professional degree in Architecture and an M.S. in Conservation and Rehabilitation of the Built Heritage from Havana’s Higher Polytechnic Institute, as well as a Post-Graduate Certificate in Conservation of Historic Buildings and Archaeological Sites from Columbia University in New York.
