This session has qualified for 1.5 LU|HSW Credits
Sharing their experiences in the conservation, rehabilitation, and stewardship of public places that hold meaning for their local communities, presenters share experiences and frameworks for carefully evaluating both materials and practice to ensure long term preservation. Through a range of case studies, papers in this session also interrogate key questions related to material conservation and repair. Ivan Myjer introduces participants to the complex challenges of conserving Bartholdi’s Monument to Liberty, artwork integrated directly into the masonry tower. David Wark encourages participants to customize Preservation Brief #16 for selecting exterior substitute materials by showcasing ongoing projects at the University of Oregon. Rashmi Gajare centres the local community and presents conservation work happening in tandem with stewardship in India. And Mary Jablonski reveals the process that went into carefully mending mistakes made to Constantino Nivola’s horses at a housing plaza in New York City.
HSW Justification
All four learning objectives relate to the HSW topics of project management, programming and analysis, and project development and documentation. The session focuses on a range of remedial interventions that enhance safety and well being with appropriate treatments for monumental artwork, including elements that are integrated into load bearing elements. The session also addresses community involvement in decision-making processes, encouraging social interaction and anchoring intervention in the local human experience.
