In 2017, the City of Montreal adopted the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (2007) and then published its Reconciliation Strategy 2020-2025. The Société du parc Jean-Drapeau, which has the mandate to manage the largest and oldest park in Montreal, has made reconciliation a strategic orientation of its2020-2030 Master Plan and has begun the implementation of a plan for action in reconciliation. The session will bring together various contributors from Montreal who will present case studies, strategic documents and projects aimed at indigenizing the Quebec metropolis. The speakers will present the Indigenous design strategy for Parc Jean-Drapeau, the new design of Peel Street, how heritage buildings can be adapted to host First Nations projects and a contextual overview of Montreal's journey towards indigenizing its spaces to foster a more inclusive community and representative urban space. It will be about processes, concerted approaches, lessons learned and concrete examples enhancing the indigenous presence and the broadening of the definition of the collective heritage of the city.
