This session has qualified for 1.5 LU|HSW Credits
Three monumental masonry buildings – two cathedrals and one train station – will provide the context for discussion on the topics of the investigation of root causes of deterioration and the assessment of existing conditions, structural behaviour, and support conditions of historic buildings. The session will explore several investigation and assessment techniques, including sensors and structural health monitoring (SHM), exploratory openings, material testing, and modeling. The follow-up strategies and interventions that were subsequently developed will also be presented, including the various project-specific factors that influenced their selection.
HSW Justification
All four learning objectives relate to the HSW topics of design and maintenance of masonry buildings. The proper, successful maintenance of masonry buildings has a direct impact on the life-safety and welfare of the public, given the potential risk to public safety, structural integrity, and loss of ife or property. Damage and impact caused by falling debris and partial or full failures of these types of buildings extend well beyond the building proper to adjacent areas and structures.
