Senior Principal, Director of Historic Preservation

With over 30 years of experience in historic preservation, James W Shepherd, a Senior Principal and SmithGroup’s Director of Historic Preservation, has directed projects of national significance for clients such as the National Park Service, the Department of State, the Smithsonian Instituion, the District of Columbia Courts and the Architect of the Capitol. He has contributed to the restoration of many National Historic Landmarks such as Grand Central Station, Ellis Island and Henry Ford’s Fair Lane.
Prior to joining SmithGroup, Jim served as the Director of Preservation and Facilities for Washington National Cathedral for over six years and oversaw repairs due to damage caused by a 2011 earthquake. The book he authored, titled The Day the Earth Shook, chronicles these repairs and the history of construction of this landmark.
He has served in many leadership capacities for APT over the years, is a frequent lecturer and symposium participant at APT Conferences and has authored many articles for the APT Bulleitn. Jim was a founding Co-Chair of the APT Documentation Committe and serves as Chair of the AIA Historic Resoures Subcommittee for Documentation. He also sits on the Board of Directors of the DC Preservation League.
Jim is a graduate of Vadnerbilt University and holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin with a specialty in historic preservation.
