This session has qualified for 1.5 LU|HSW Credits
Session CS2.4 Reuse and Restore will explore the design and technical conservation challenges as well as tools and strategies for the reuse and rehabilitation of heritage buildings. Presenters will discuss and describe their approaches for repurposing these structures for commercial and institutional uses and will consider adaptive reuse as a means to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
HSW Justification
This session will address the two following HSW topics:
• Project management: Some presentations will present the process for integrating the different expertise at different stages in the project’s development.
• Programming and analysis: Some presentation will present the adaptation measures required to adapt the existing building’s features to the new use intended by the client. This category focuses on areas related to the evaluation of project requirements, constraints, and opportunities.
This session will underscore the complex coordination between technical and regulatory constraints when applying new construction and existing building codes to historic buildings to enhance life safety, barrier-free access, sustainability and wellness. It also discusses opportunities created by adaptive reuse, from more equitable access and increased public interaction, to reducing carbon footprint, and allowing the continued experience of historic structures through reinvention.
