This session has qualified for 1.5 LU|HSW Credits
The papers in this session provide practice-based analysis of issues involved in alterations, modernizations, and adaptive reuse of historic structures. The focus is on meeting modern code and use requirements when they conflict with presentation theory and practice. Conflict areas include accessibility, energy efficiency, fire protection, and feasibility of use for new or modernized occupancies.
HSW Justification
Each of the learning objectives directly relates the HSW Topics noted by linking the HSW areas of planning and design to the issues noted in historic structure adaptive reuse. Objective 1 relates to HSW Project Planning & Design; Objective 2 relates to HSW Project Development & Documentation); and Objectives 3 and 4 relate to HSW Programming & Analysis.
Code compliance is a key factor to ensure life safety, equitable access, and enhanced well being. Application of new construction, and existing building codes requires informed decision-making, and balance between ultimate goals of minimizing loss of life and property, improving wellness and barrier-free access, and retaining historically significant fabric.
